To be the global leader supplying portable and compact FT-IR spectrometers for field and industrial use through innovation and outstanding customer responsiveness.
Designs & Prototypes is a privately held corporation founded in 1984 by Dr. Jens Peter Dybwad to focus on the development and supply of compact and portable FT-IR spectrometers, as well as contract research and development. Dr. Dybwad is a pioneer in the area of fast-scanning spectrometers, as well as being known for his compact and robust designs.
In 1991 Mr. Winthrop Wadsworth joined the company, bringing with him expertise in spectrometer electronics and processing, which allowed the company to expand further. Over the next years the company built its strong reputation for high quality, excellent reliability, and the innovative designs which provide mobile or compact solutions which are low in power consumption, high in performance, and which take up very small footprints. Ground based and airborne installations world wide in the areas of:
- remote sensing
- environmental applications
- Customer Satisfaction
- Agility, Speed and Flexibility
- Continuous learning and improvement
Dr. Jens Peter Dybwad is the Treasurer and Chief Scientist for the company. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Tuebingen, Germany in 1966. Dr. Dybwad has been a pioneer in the field of fast-scanning FT-IR spectrometers, and has a long history of accomplishments. Dr. Dybwad has designed and developed multiple cryogenic FT-IR systems during his tenure at PerkinElmer, and has developed FT-IR systems for the study of the Aurora Borealis while at Utah State University. Dr. Dybwad is the inventor of and patent holder for D&P Instruments’ MicroFT (US Patent Number 5,173,744) and TurboFT (US Patent Number 4,654,530) spectrometers. He has also collaborated on numerous designs with Mr. Wadsworth on a broad array of custom developed instruments for our customers.
Mr. Winthrop Wadsworth is the President and Chief Engineer for the company. He received a Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University in 1977 and a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1976. Mr. Wadsworth has been in the field of FT-IR since 1980, and provides demonstrated expertise in the design of drive and sampling electronics, high efficiency power drive designs, and software development for D&P Instruments.
